Brief Profile

Professor Dr. M A Mannan is the Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University – the only technology-mediated public university for open and distance education. Prior to joining Bangladesh Open University, he served at Dhaka University Department of Management (joined in 1975) as Professor and departmental chairman as well as Director of MBA Program. He was Director of the Bureau of Business Research, and Provost of Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall of Dhaka University, in addition to serving as Senate Member for consecutive three terms and also as the General Secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers Association for three terms and Secretary General of the Bangladesh Federation of University Teachers Associations. He was a Guest Lecturer in the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University; and Director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh, for over two years in each. He was a Visiting Scholar/Professor at the Western Kentucky University, USA, and at the ILO International Training Centre at Turin, Italy. He was the Vice Chancellor of a private university. Recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Senior Fellowship (USA) and Commonwealth Senior Academic Staff Fellowship (UK) for pursuing postdoctoral research, Dr. Mannan has had more than 70 research publications and monographs to his credit published in the reputed business and management journals published from Bangladesh, New Delhi, England, USA and South Korea. Besides, he has authored a number of textbooks for advanced students in business management and commerce; some of these have been published from England and New Delhi. As a consultant, he has worked in several research and consultancy projects, either independently or with others, sponsored by the United Nations Organization (New York), UNDP, the United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations (New York), The World Bank, International Finance Corporation, Asian Development Bank, European Commission, The Johns Hopkins University-USA, USAID, Pathfinder International, AVSC International, MSH (USA), Save the Children (USA), UNICEF, DFID, SIDA, CIDA, GTZ-Bangladesh, ILO International Training Centre (Turin, Italy), Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)/South Korea, Ministry of Education/Sri Lanka, Ministry of Education/Bangladesh, Planning Commission/GOB, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/GoB, Ministry of Social Welfare/GoB, Bangladesh Civil Service Administration Academy, Bangladesh University Grants Commission, Bandarban Hill District Council and several business conglomerates. He has served on the Board of Directors of a couple of companies either as Chairman or Director.
He has wide experience in management consulting and in developing strategic plans/business plans for both the public sector and private sector organizations and donor-funded projects. As International Consultant, Dr. Mannan was directly involved in the development/preparation of participatory training guidelines/manuals along with resource books for the Ministry of Education, Government of Sri Lanka (in 2009) and conducted workshops for the central and provincial education managers and school principals in Sri Lanka.
At Bangladesh Open University (since 2013), he played the catalytic role in having developed several ICT-based applications and mechanisms for the delivery of education to learners such as BOUTUBE, Internet-based TV channel and Radio channel, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) Channel, mobile technology for using video lectures without Internet, dynamic website, e-books, education apps, interactive virtual classrooms (IVCR), e-learning platform (Learning Management System), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Online Service and Payment System, Open Educational Resources (OER) Repository and Online Admission and Result Management Systems.
Dr. M A Mannan obtained graduate and post-graduate degrees in business management from the University of Dhaka, securing first class in both; and doctorate degree in business administration from the University of Delhi. He topped the list in both the secondary and higher secondary certificate examinations. He completed postdoctoral programs in business administration at the University of Manchester, England, and in Strategic and Total Quality Management at the Western Kentucky University, USA. He received advanced training in Social and Business Research Methodology, Business Case Development, Management Consulting, University Administration, and Organizational Leadership.
